"Tubthumping" made the British musical collective known as Chumbawamba a household name in the United States for the first time in their 15-year career. Telling the tale of a seemingly melancholy drunk “pissing his life away” it is buoyed by its never-say-die chorus: “You’re never gonna keep me down!”
Phish debuted this pop hit as the encore to the second show of a two night run at the Hampton Coliseum on 11/21/98. This performance, which featured lyricist Tom “Jersey Drunk” Marshall on lead vocals and Carl Gerhard on trumpet, was released on Hampton Comes Alive and included Fishman teases of Will Smith’s “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” in the chorus.
