One of the more enjoyable aspects of Trey’s solo tours is the relaxed setting, that recalls a bygone era of Phish shows. The flip side of that phenomenon is that – even in an age of iPhones and twitter – setlists and recordings, especially from shows outside the northeast, often surface in a slow-motion manner that also recalls the mid-’90s. On TAB tour, even commonly played song titles and placements are often confused at first, but are usually sorted out soon thereafter. When Trey introduces new material, though, confusion and speculation often reign, even when he tries to inform the audience.
Trey attempted to do just that on 10/7/11 in Myrtle Beach when he explained to the audience that they we’re “all going to get naked on stage . . . and [play] a new song for the encore” called “The Land of Nod.” Although Trey told the audience that this was a song he wrote by himself (because The Land of Nod is “a journey that you can only take alone”), post-show reports initially claimed that it was a cover of The New Mastersounds song of the same name. Thankfully, Trey corrected the record the next night in Baltimore and reiterated that the song was, in fact, an original.
Students of the Bible know The Land of Nod as the land East of Eden where Cain fled after murdering Abel. For students of TAB, the bone shaking poly-rhythms of “The Land of Nod” may also recall a bygone era, though one far more recent than the Book of Genesis. As well received as the song has been, it’s a little difficult to hear it and not wonder what the dectet version of TAB (and Cyro Baptista, in particular) could have done with it. Regardless of the lineup, “The Land of Nod” shows real potential. Hopefully, it will buck the recent trend of abandoned new songs and find a permanent home in the TAB repertoire.
