The two-night run on 6/13 and 6/14/97 in Dublin, Ireland witnessed the live performance debut of no less than thirteen Phish originals including future repertoire workhorses “Ghost,” “Piper,” and “Limb By Limb”. While easy to get lost in the shuffle of such significant original debuts, the encore on 6/13/97 also yielded two debut covers with a nod to a pair of musical and cultural powerhouses of the late 1960s.

The title track to the hit 1968 album Stand!, this Sly and the Family Stone cover was an exhilarating early example of the funky grooves that defined much of Phish’s sound in 1997, and beyond. 1960s San Francisco Psychedelic Funk meets 1990s Vermont Cow Funk… in Ireland, of all places. This spirited cover included “start-stop” jamming and a genuine and fluid transition into the Jimi Hendrix rocker, “Izabella.”
While “Stand” was only performed by Phish in public on that one occasion to date, Phish members paired it with “Izabella” two previous times: first Trey and Mike in the one-show-only band New York! on 5/21/97 at Burlington’s now-defunct Club Toast, and then Phish as a whole on 6/6/97 at the private rehearsal gig and keg party commonly known as “Bradstock.”
