Music: Anastasio

Lyrics: Trey Anastasio/Dina Anastasio/The Dude of Life

Vocals: Trey

Debut: 1984-12-01

Historian: Mark Toscano

Written in the early ‘80s by Trey with his mother, Dina, “Skippy” features bizarre kiddie lyrics over a Trey composition that would eventually serve as the bulk of “McGrupp.” The 12/1/84 Nectar’s debut featured The Dude of Life on vocals, although Trey sang it himself in subsequent versions. “Skippy” was played on only four known occasions, the last being 10/30/85. After that time “McGrupp” – more or less the same music but with Tom Marshall’s lyrics – had taken its place

Lyrics:

(Anastasio/Anastasio/Pollak)

Skippy the Wondermouse
Now he's picking diamonds in the daytime
Skippy the Wondermouse
Now he's picking diamonds in the daytime

Skippy is nasty, and Skippy is mean
Lost all his money in the slot machine
Still he gets nasty, and still he is mean
Prettiest mouse that I ever seen

[For the debut, The Dude sang four other verses here, largely indecipherable from recordings. For the Oct 85 version, Trey only sang the lines above then the lines below. We had listed a 3/4/85 Skippy, but that includes none of these lyrics and was actually McGrupp. We currently also list a 3/16/85 version, of which there are no recordings; we know the band called it Skippy at the time, but they also called the 3/4/85 version Skippy - but 3/16 probably also had the McGrupp lyrics, such that there were only two performances of Skippy as such.]

Skippy is nasty, and Skippy is mean
Lost all his money in the slot machine
Skippy is nasty, and Skippy is mean
Lost all his money in the slot machine

Skippy the Wondermouse
Now he's picking diamonds in the daytime
Skippy the Wondermouse
Now he's picking diamonds in the daytime
