Original Artist: Trey Anastasio
Historian: Tim Wade (TheEmu)
Debuted on 2/22/01 at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, NY, the instrumental “Nothing But an ‘E’ Thing” would eventually become known to Phish fans as the introductory, pre-jam, and closing sections of “Pebbles and Marbles.” The song received 7 performances on TAB’s Winter 2001 tour and was played twice more in July of that year before being retired. On 2/24/01, at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA, Trey dedicated the song to his father, which could mean that the “E” stands for “Ernest” (if not the key the song is played in).

In addition to its continued life as “Pebbles and Marbles,” “Nothing But an ‘E’ Thing” was rearranged into an orchestral piece, retitled “Prologue,” and released on Trey’s 2004 album Seis de Mayo.
