If you have ever been to a wedding in Vermont you undoubtedly have heard Moonlight in Vermont. An American pop song published in 1943 with a difficult melody and tricky lyrics written in haiku form, “Moonlight in Vermont” has been covered by many artists, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughan, Gerry Mulligan, Buddy Greco, and Betty Carter. Willie Nelson had incorporated this tune into his repertoire since the late 70's and has described this song in interviews as one of the greatest songs ever written, especially for it's difficulty. At the 10/3/98 Farm Aid concert, host Willie Nelson and Paul Shaffer came on-stage for the Live Aid finale after a Phish and Neil Young set for a lovely and tender rendition.
